Why most small-business sites get slow in year two

A site that felt snappy at launch often feels heavy 18 months later. The cause is rarely “the internet”. It is unused plugins, uncompressed photos and a host that was never checked again.

Launch day is a performance high-water mark. The theme is clean, the image folder is small, and nobody has installed a pop-up tool “just to try”. Year two is different.

The usual pile-up

Four things show up in almost every slow-site review we run:

  • Full-resolution phone photos dropped straight into the page.
  • Plugins that were added for one campaign and never removed.
  • A cache plugin fighting a page builder.
  • Hosting on the original cheap plan long after traffic grew.

A monthly habit that works

Once a month: update on staging, delete one unused plugin, compress any new images, and load the home page on a phone using the office Wi-Fi off. If it feels sticky, fix that before adding a feature.

That is the core of a Trinity care plan. Speed is not a project. It is a habit.
